The meanings of the cards are deduced from their positions and those of their neighbors once they have been put out. Let's start with the Celtic Cross spread.

Look at the Circle/Cross portion first. At the time of the reading, the cards in this position symbolize what is occurring.

The next step is to examine the first six cards in pairs. The images on these cards depict your current state of affairs. Cards in position 1 (the core issue) and position 2 (the secondary problem that can either oppose or reinforce this central theme) will determine the reading's central subject.
